Judge Baumann earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado and his law degree at Tulane University. He joined the Denver office of the Colorado State Public Defender in 2002 and became head of that office in 2010.

He became a Denver District Court judge. In 2022 he became Chief Judge of the Denver District Court. He currently presides over civil cases, the Statewide Grand Jury proceedings, and search and arrest warrants.
