Judge Karpel graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder, earned his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and received an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. After law school he accepted a commission in the Navy's Judge Advocate General Corps and served as a prosecutor and defense counsel. He was a Senior Deputy District Attorney with the Denver District Attorney's Office, then a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Justice Department's Organized Crime and Gang Section in Washington, D.C.
He was appointed to the District Court bench in 2023.
