Judge McDonald earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School. He has been an attorney in private practice for nearly thirty years. In May 2005 he was appointed Gunnison Municipal Judge, and he continues to serve as a municipal court judge in five Colorado municipalities.
He was appointed to the Hinsdale County bench in May 2020. His docket consists of civil and criminal cases.
