Judge Southerland graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, and from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She spent 15 years as an attorney working with children and families. In 2017 she began working as a magistrate in the 17th Judicial District.

She was appointed a district court judge in the 17th Judicial District, effective January 10, 2023.
