Judge Russell grew up in rural Indiana and graduated from Indiana University. She earned her law degree at the University of Colorado Law School in 1987. She worked for an insurance defense firm and then became a Deputy District Attorney in Adams County. She later became Chief Deputy City Attorney in Lakewood.
She was appointed to the Jefferson County District Court on October 1, 2005. She had a mixed docket of criminal, civil and domestic relations cases. In February 2026 her docket changed to all criminal cases.
